Why cats make biscuits?

If you've ever had a cat knead on you, you've probably wondered why they do it. Known as “making biscuits” or “baking bread,” kneading is a common and endearing behavior many cats display. It’s not only adorable, but it also has a deeper meaning—cats knead for comfort, to create cozy resting spots, and even to mark their territory.

Kneading is a behavior that starts in kittenhood. When kittens are nursing from their mothers, they knead their mother’s belly to stimulate the milk flow. As they grow, the act of kneading continues, providing a sense of calm and security. It's a behavior that many adult cats carry with them, even if they’re no longer nursing. The rhythmic motion of pushing their paws against soft surfaces, like blankets, your lap, or even pillows, is soothing and comforting for them.

Not all cats knead in the same way, though. Some cats are gentle with their paws, while others may apply more pressure when they knead. They tend to knead soft, comfortable surfaces, and it’s often accompanied by purring and a calm demeanor. If your cat is kneading on you, it’s typically a sign of affection. They feel safe, secure, and loved in your presence.

So, why do cats knead on humans specifically? There are a few reasons that might explain it. First, it’s a way for cats to show they care. Kneading releases the bonding hormone oxytocin, helping them feel closer to you. If your cat kneads you, they’re communicating that they trust you and enjoy being around you. Secondly, kneading can be a request for attention. When your cat kneads your lap, they might be hoping for petting, cuddles, or just a little extra attention.

Sometimes, though, kneading can be a sign that your cat is stressed or anxious. The motion may remind them of the comfort they felt when they were kittens, nursing from their mothers. If you notice other signs of stress, like a flicking tail or rapid breathing, it’s possible that kneading is helping your cat calm down. Additionally, cats in heat often display more kneading behavior, along with other signs of heightened affection.

But cats don’t just knead people—they also knead on blankets, pillows, and other soft surfaces. When your cat kneads on a blanket, they might be marking it with their scent, as there are scent glands in their paws. This allows them to claim the blanket as their own and feel more secure in their space. Kneading is also a way for cats to get comfortable. Much like how we fluff pillows before bed, cats knead to create the perfect spot for a nap. And, just like stretching after a long day, kneading helps stretch their muscles, keeping them flexible and healthy.

If you’re wondering whether you should stop your cat from kneading, the answer is generally no. Kneading is a natural and comforting behavior for cats, and it shouldn’t be discouraged. Instead, try to guide your cat to knead on appropriate surfaces. You can make their favorite spots even more enticing by placing a special blanket or soft mat in a cozy area where they can knead to their heart’s content. If your cat is kneading on a spot where it’s not ideal (like on your lap or on the furniture), gently redirect them to their designated spot. You can even offer them treats or praise when they knead in the right place.

One thing you might consider is trimming your cat’s nails. This can help prevent any accidental scratching or painful kneading, especially if they tend to knead a lot. And if your cat is kneading on your lap, you can also use a blanket to create a soft buffer between your cat and your clothing.

It’s important to provide a calm, quiet environment for your cat, especially if stress seems to be a factor. Cats thrive in peaceful spaces where they feel secure. You can help by creating a routine, providing soft bedding, and avoiding any sudden changes that might cause stress.

To encourage safe and healthy kneading, give your cat plenty of comfortable, designated areas to knead on. Invest in cat-friendly bedding or soft mats, and make sure your cat has a variety of textures to choose from. Cats love different surfaces—plush toys, soft fabrics, or even old blankets can be perfect. The key is to let them knead in a way that’s soothing for them while also ensuring it doesn’t cause any harm to your furniture or your lap.
