How to Safely Reintroduce Outdoor Walks After the Summer Heat

October marks the return of cooler mornings and evenings, a much-awaited time for UAE pet parents to enjoy outdoor walks again. But after months of staying indoors due to extreme heat, your pet’s body needs time to readjust safely to outdoor activity.

Step 1: Start Slow and Steady

Begin with short walks (10–15 minutes) during early mornings or late evenings when the temperature is mild. Gradually increase duration over one to two weeks so your pet’s stamina builds naturally.
Sudden, long walks can cause fatigue, dehydration, or sore paws, especially if your pet hasn’t been active for a while.

Step 2: Protect Those Paws

Even though it’s cooler, UAE pavements can still hold heat from the day.

  • Test the ground: Place your hand on the surface for 5 seconds; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.
  • Use paw balms or boots: These protect from hot surfaces and rough sand.
  • After each walk: Wipe paws clean to remove dust, salt, or debris that can irritate the skin.

Step 3: Prioritize Hydration

Hydration is crucial even in cooler weather.

  • Carry a portable water bottle during walks.
  • Offer water breaks every 15–20 minutes.
  • Add a little wet food or broth to meals to keep hydration levels up.

Watch for signs of dehydration: dry gums, heavy panting, or lethargy, and rest immediately if you spot them.

Step 4: Gradual Reconditioning

If your pet gained weight or lost muscle tone during summer, start with light activities such as short leash walks, gentle fetch, or climbing stairs.
Once your pet adapts, introduce longer walks or agility exercises. This helps strengthen muscles and joints while keeping them mentally stimulated.

Step 5: Regular Health & Grooming Checks

Post-summer grooming helps remove dead fur and prevents matting. A quick vet check ensures your pet is fit for increased outdoor time, especially for older pets or those with breathing issues.

In short, the key to a safe outdoor comeback is patience, hydration, and protection. With the right care, your furry companion can enjoy every fresh breeze and wag-filled walk this season.
